LONAP AGM - Year in review
The official minutes from the meeting will be distributed to members and will be subject to approval by the Members of the Company at the next Annual General Meeting in 2025.
LONAP Activities Update
The invoiced revenue from 2020 to 2024 was adjusted to reflect 2015 values, effectively eliminating inflationary impacts, which revealed a slight increase.
Richard Irving also shared insights regarding the balance of ASNs entering and exiting the exchange. Until this year, the figures had remained relatively stable, but a notable surge in new ASNs has been observed, attributed to two highly active Reseller Members, who have successfully onboarded numerous resold customers.
Additionally, Richard briefly discussed LONAP’s ISO27k certification, the ongoing LONAP Test & Measurement initiative, and the collaboration with LINX and Nominet for the NetUK event.
Technical Update
Will Hargrave provided an overview of the hardware and network topology utilised at the Exchange.
Since the summer of 2024, there has been significant growth in coherent 400G-ZR optics. Since mid-2019, both 100G and 400G ports have seen increased adoption, with LONAP now boasting over 10 Tbps of connected member edge ports.
In 2024, LONAP traffic reached a peak of 1.9 Tbps, representing a remarkable 71% increase year-on-year.
Building on the success of partial ports on 10G media introduced in 2018, LONAP has expanded this model to include fractional ports on 100G media (details). The 1G ports have been phased out from new supply, with plans for complete discontinuation by the end of 2025, while LONAP is also enhancing its capacity for 400G edge ports across multiple locations.
Will also provided an update on unknown unicast events; although the network’s rate-limiting measures have mitigated serious issues, LONAP will persist in investigating the underlying causes of these occurrences.
In concluding the technical update, Will outlined the objectives for 2025, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a well-dimensioned platform, facilitating the transition from 10G to 100G and from 100G to 400G ports, and selecting appropriately sized optical solutions to support member growth.
Operational Update
The concluding presentation was given by Rob Lister, who discussed front-line operations at LONAP. This year has been notably active, with a high volume of support tickets and varying response times, depending on individual tickets.
During his update, Rob highlighted the status of route servers, noting that there are currently 290 IPv4 ASNs, with 89% connected and peering, and 270 IPv6 ASNs, with a 90% connection and peering rate. A significant majority of the prefixes are RPKI valid.
LONAP has also engaged in various community projects throughout 2024, including providing technical support for NetUK’s inaugural event in July, and participating in Euro-IX meetings, the Route Server Workshop, and RIPE meetings.
In 2024, LONAP hosted two training sessions and is planning to offer more in 2025. These training opportunities are made possible by the generous contributions of LONAP members, who provide meeting rooms at no charge. If you are interested in hosting a training session, please contact training@lonap.net.
